About the Book

There are a lot of Java books on the market; quite possibly too many. Why write another?

While there may be a lot of Java books available, most are written for experienced programmers. After working on "JavaScript for the World Wide Web, Visual QuickStart Guide, 2nd Edition" I found that I was getting e-mail requesting that I write a Java book "just like the JavaScript book, please?".

After looking around for a book to recommend to novice programmers, I found that there wasn't anything available fitting quite that niche--so, I wrote one (the 1st edition). I was happy to see that book find its way to the same people who bought so many of the JavaScript book: students learning the subject in a classroom, and people who've done little to no programming before.

The 1st edition, though, was all about Java 1.0. Enough time has gone by, and operating systems and browsers revised, that it was time to do a full update for Java 2. That's what the current edition covers, along with more explanations to cover where readers told me they were needed.
